Ayurveda the Science of Life
Ayurveda also considers emotions and psychological status
of paramount importance as causative agent as well as crucial for recovery of
disease conditions. In fact emotions are considered more important than physical
factors. A patient can have right diet and herbs but if MIND is out of balance
(agitated/disturbed) and /or wrong attitude towards treatment, therapy is NOT
going to be effective fully. If you are at peace with yourself, you will surely
avoid many unwanted ailments. And for this one needs correct understanding of
life itself.
For a simplistic understanding: according to ayurveda body
is regulated by a combination of three factors (forces)
1 Air ( vatha)
2. Fire (pitta)
3. Water ( kabha)
Only when these three forces are not in balance then
disease is the outcome. When one factor is out of balance (less or more than
needed) it is called a dosha (fault). So each one of these vatha, pitta or kabha
can become subdued or excessive leading to disorders of health.
Body type of each individual has a combination of these
three doshas. Normally one dosha will be predominant and this is what determines
constitution of an individual and his unique body type. Predominant dosha also
helps to determine the qualities, behavior and tendencies of the person in
health and disease. So there are vatha, pitta or kabha type persons. There is
also sub classification. For example if an individual is pitta but of the other
two doshas (vatha and kabha) vatha is more dominant then the person is called
pitta vatha and so on for other combinations. All these persons are healthy and
have their own constitution and behavior but it is of paramount importance to
determine the classification because that is a very important starting point in
ayurvedic treatment philosophy.
Dominant dosha regulates your body and does not change for
rest of your life normally. In rare situations like accident or major event it
sometimes can undergo change. It is helpful to rely on fixed attributes eg body
frame, weight, complexion, eyes, likes of temperature/tastes etc to determine
the dosha which is dominant in a person.
When doshas go out of balance in a person it manifests in
disease.
Treatment
Unlike in allopathy where you get drugs in fixed dosage,
ayurvedic herbs are not always same. Potency of herbs can vary depending upon
the source and reason. And hence experienced practitioner always is careful to
give herb from a new lot and watches response of the first few patients.
Once the dosha is determined the vaidhya ( ayurvedic
doctor) will give you medicines to consume and also give external therapies
which will balance your dosha. Once the original balance has been achieved the
person is restored to good healthy state.
