Critical Appraisal Skill Program

Report of the CASP workshop 12-13 Feb 2005

The workshop was inaugurated by Hon Chairman and MLA Sri Charantimath.

This workshop was attended by 38 Post graduates of Dental colleges from Bagalkot, Davangere, Bijapur, Gulbarga and Bangalore.

Introductory talk was given by Prof. Beena Rani Goel, she explained what is critical

Appraisal and why it is an invaluable skill for all Post graduates. This was followed by a talk by Smt.Vasumathi Sriganesh from Mumbai who in detail explained about different resources to obtain the needed information.

Next talk was given on Research Methodology by Prof. Sumant Goel, who explained about different types of studies and their advantages and disadvantages.

After lunch there were two more talks on �how to formulate a question by using PICO approach. This was followed by a very informative talk about how to search Medline. There was a live demonstration which was highly appreciated.

Before end of the day participants were given two papers and two check lists, one set each for Systematic review and one set for Randomized control trial. They were asked to do a reading and come prepared the next day.

Next day session started with a lecture on basics of Statistics. It was explained why confidence interval are now becoming common practice in many journals.

This was followed by Group activity with one RCT and one Systematic Review, then groups presented their findings and it was followed by discussion and evaluation.

Participant were also given various handouts on sites of ebm, scopenotes, and pubmed quick guide.

During the feedback session all the participants gave a 8+ rating out of 10 and majority felt that this will help them a great deal in their work, and such workshop should be made mandatory for all PGs.
