This is a photograph of the one of my operatories showing the ceiling mounted Global protégé plus.
This microscope has 6 magnifications on it (2.64X, 4X, 6.4X,10X, 16X, and 24X). It can be ceiling mounted, wall
mounted or floor mounted.
Mine is equipped with a 35 mm camera for shooting slides ( soon to be a digital Nikon d1 camera) and a video camera which transmits a live video feed of the procedure to a video printer, VCR and wall mounted monitor for the assistant to view. It also is hooked up
to a ceiling mounted TV ( top left corner) so that the patient can view the procedure as well.

This is a floor mounted ( somewhat mobile) protégé plus Global scope in room 2. This scope doesn't have any of
the fancy accesssories such as 35mm camera attachments or S-Video feed to it. Illumination is provided by a 150W
halogen bulb that has a life expectancy of between 40-200 hours depending on the type of bulb you use. The bulbs
are around 10 dollars each. My other microscope is powered by a metal Halide bulb source which has a life
expectancy of 4000 hours ( several years) and costs around 500 dollars per bulb.

This box is in room 1 ( first picture above) and is mounted in the wall opposite the assistants stool.
The top white box is a video printer which can capture photos from the microscope for instant printing. 1,2,4 and 16 prints can be placed on one print.
The second unit is a VCR unit for video taping procedures which I edit and use for my lectures.
The thirteen inch Video monitor below shows 4 images of varying magnification captured by the video
printer. It can show frozen images or the live feed. It is very useful for the assistant to gain a
detailed view of exactly what I am seeing through the scope. Also useful for parents watching their child's
procedure and for hands-on workshops which I put on in the office that other dentists can see what is going on in without
peering over my shoulder. |

The Global micro-surgeon's chair allows for tremendous support of the arms and back when you are practicing
microscopic dentistry. When providing treatment with magnification, physiological tremor is a real concern and your
arms are supported by the fully adjustable pads. The seat, backrest and height are also fully
adjustable. Interesting, microsurgical periodontist, Dennis Shanelec has shown that with practice and support ( the
chair) that dentists can improve their motor skills from macro-motor (1-2mm movements) to micromotor (10-20 microns or
10-20\1000th of a mm) movements when using magnification of 20X power. The eyes are the weak link in the whole equation |
