What is an email list?

An email list is a convenient way for a group of people sharing common interests to communicate via email. It is a forum for interaction, discussion and sharing information of all kinds.

How does an email list work?

Email lists simply allow you to send a single email to a single address and have that message automatically redistributed to all the members on the list.

Why would I want to subscribe to an email list?

The reasons for participating in email lists are infinite, including wanting to receive information, enter a discussion forum on a topic of interest to you, participate in a support group etc.

What software do I need to participate?

Since most email lists are based on sending and receiving e-mail, you will need an application in which you can read and compose e-mail. So if you are sending and receiving e mails you are already prepared to join these discussions. You can also see and view messages only on web without getting in your e mail, to do this go to the link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rotaryendo/ and log in.

What are some "Dos" and "Don'ts"?

Do "lurk" for a while before leaping into discussions on a particular list. (lurking means reading the messages on a list for a time before posting).

Do follow the guidelines set by the list owner.

Do stay relevant to the topic with comments and questions.

Do be succinct and always accurate when quoting people.

Don't be antagonistic, "flame" people or use offensive language. Flaming is communicating emotionally and/or excessively via email. This can occur if a discussion gets heated and usually a limited number of members take over the list ruining the experience for others - not recommended!

Don't send subscribe or unsubscribe mail to the list as this irritates people on the list.

Don't assume every list member will understand your cultural references to things like Television, movies, pop culture, or current events in your country. If you use such a reference, please explain it.

What is a digest?

A digest is a collection of list messages compiled into one email. Digests are often chosen as a way to decrease the amount of email received from a list.
