Book review The influence of oral habits on the developing dentition and their treatment : clinical and historical perspectives / by Erik Larsson, and other contributors ; editor, Samir Bishara. / Larsson, Erik. -- [Skara, Sweden : E. Larsson], 2003
Dr Erik Larsson, Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Oslo, has written this short very informative book that provides extensive information about breast-feeding, thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and their influence on dental occlusion and facial growth. It is by far the best source of this info I have come across. He deals with the historical and cultural aspects in fine details, examines all possible causative factors behind non nutritional digit sucking habits in light of current research.
He deals with the modifications and changes taking place in breast feeding right from the time man lived in jungles as a tribe. How in evolving humans, industrialization and colonization impacted the changing behavior and craving in growing kids has been presented in a very readable format. Dr Larsson has taken great pains to collect various sources and pictures (from Museums) to make his descriptions reliable and authentic. All the aspects related to development of these habits, their impact on growth and development of arches and the best timing and modalities for the treatments has been discussed and described with great clarity.
Dentists particularly Orthodontists and Pedodontists will find much information in this book that will broaden their understanding on this subject and improve their handling and treatment of this growing problem among our young population. This book is also a very useful reading for the parents of the affected children and adolescents.
