Oral Health is Mandatory Not Optional

Current research has now established that good Oral health is an asset and several systemic problems can arise due to infected mouth/gums.

There are 41 million diabetics in India, all these people need good oral health care and maintenance, there is an urgent need to educate all the stake holders so that these people can be helped to lead better quality life.

One link that is very important is diabetic link. The FDI World Dental Federation and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) jointly organised a symposium on Oral Health and Diabetes on 25 October 2007 during the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai, UAE.

Their recommendations are:
  • To include prevention of oral disease and promotion of oral health as an essential component of diabetes management;
  • To include routine oral screening of people with diabetes;
  • To improve knowledge about the reciprocal link between diabetes and oral health
    among all stakeholders, health professionals, people with diabetes, the public
    and policy makers.

Virtually all of the major systemic disorders are thought to have some sort of inflammatory component and the discovery of the exact mechanisms of inflammation may lead to more effective treatments and lower mortality in the future.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory process, so it serves to reason that active periodontal infection may have far reaching consequences beyond the oral cavity as periodontal pathogens gain access to the bloodstream and/or exert their tissue altering inflammatory effects in other organ systems. Now there is also research showing that patients with kidney disorders can benefit from good oral care. Initial findings have also shown that there are more chances of abortion in first 32 weeks if mother has periodontal infection.
