Orthodontic Hardware v/s Software

Can you think of a PC without software, what will it do? Funnily lot of dentists believe that they can just manage with orthodontic hardware. Imagine what all you will be able to do once you have the software, you will be able to perform all the useful operations with ease and speed.

1.Nobel Direct was launched in 2004 by Nobel Biocare AB. The implants were considered a great innovation, as they could be screwed directly into the jawbone without having to first lift up the mucous membrane. After one year, about five per cent of the implants were lost, and 20 per cent of the remaining implants showed bone loss of more than three millimetres. The new report indicates that after three years, eight per cent of the implants had been lost, and 25 per cent of the remaining implants showed bone loss of more than three millimetres. MORE HERE

2.The Hall Technique, which uses preformed metal crowns pushed onto teeth with no dental injections or drilling, is favored over traditional "drill and fill" methods by the majority of children ?

The Hall Technique was preferred to conventional restorations by the majority of children, carers and GDPs. After two years, Hall PMCs showed more favourable outcomes for pulpal health and restoration longevity than conventional restorations. The Hall Technique appears to offer an effective treatment option for carious primary molar teeth. Full Article

3.Did you know that new research may allow dentists to detect breast cancer via saliva tests.

The test checks saliva for marker proteins that give an early warning of the disease.
Clinical trials of a prototype are in the planning stage, the University of Texas Dental Branch team told the journal Cancer Investigation. More Here

4. Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure™ (LANAP™). LANAP-licensed practitioners are currently treating over 14,000 patients nationwide, on an annual basis. This study shows the results and in time to come Laser will be routine for perio care.

New connective tissue attachment (CTA) and regeneration of root surface (cementum) was achieved in 100 percent of the cases studied in the human histology study using the PerioLase® MVP-7 variable pulsed Neodymium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Nd:YAG) dental laser, the only laser designed especially for LANAP. Study results show the FDA-approved and patented LANAP is now a legitimate treatment alternative to conventional scalpel/suture flap surgery. More here

Two recent studies show promise that cavity causing bacteria may be rendered toothless.

1. A class of chemicals in red wine grapes may significantly reduce the ability of bacteria to cause cavities, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The findings suggest that specific polyphenols, present in large amounts in fermented seeds and skins cast away after grapes are pressed, interfere with the ability of bacteria to contribute to tooth decay. Beyond cavities, the action of the wine grape-based chemicals may also hold clues for new ways to lessen the ability of bacteria to cause life-threatening, systemic infections. 2.
Bacteria that eat sugar and release cavity-causing acid onto teeth may soon be made dramatically more vulnerable to their own acid. Researchers have identified key genes and proteins that, if interfered with, can take away the ability of a key bacterial species to thrive as its acidic waste builds up in the mouth.
Ability of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) to survive in acid is one reason that the species is the main driver of tooth decay worldwide. Past research has shown that this ability has several components including a bacterial enzyme called fatty acid biosynthase M (FabM), which when shut down, makes S. mutans almost precisely 10,000 times more vulnerable to acid damage FULL STORY HERE

3.The FDA says yes, recently certifying the first cryoanesthetic dental mouthpiece for the US OTC market. Used standalone or in conjunction with conventional anesthesia, gumEase provides pain relief without the side effects or complications of drugs. It's a tempting solution for clinicians plagued with patient needle phobia, sharps and the complex issues of hypodermic delivery.
The easy-to-use, disposable device is a breakthrough in pain management - as effective as it is inexpensive. Inserted easily into the upper and lower sulci, the latex-free device delivers a soothing, cool temperature to the maxillofacial nerves, quickly diminishing pain across a wide area of the mouth. In patient tests the new gumEase diminished pain by 90% in 2 to 3 minutes for the average participant. Patients can apply them post-operatively as needed, and reuse without side effects by storing in a household freezer. For more click HERE
