Non Extraction treatment of Mandibular crowding by Distraction, Unique approach
AJODO Volume 135, Issue 4, April 2009, Pages 530-535

In this article, we describe a midsymphyseal distraction osteogenesis treatment with a novel dentally supported appliance. This approach differs from that used in previous reports because the incisors were allowed to move during the distraction procedure. This report shows that midsymphyseal distraction osteogenesis can be used to expand both arches to produce a wider smile. Borderline cases can be treated with this technique without the compromising effects commonly observed with conventional therapy.

Enamel Strength Affected By Dental Home Bleaching

New research shows that human teeth lost some enamel hardness after the application of several different products used in the home to whiten teeth. The study suggests that future generations of such products might be reformulated in an effort to reduce these side effects.

The researchers noted that teeth typically can restore their previous hardness after losing small amounts of enamel calcification. But this is the first study to show at a nanometer scale - measuring in billionths of a meter - how human teeth are affected by the popular home whiteners. MORE HERE

The dental gold rush is on

The market in dental gold hasn't reached bonanza heights, but people squeezed by the recession are making a few extra bucks by selling old gold caps, bridgework and other bits of what is known in the trade as "dental scrap." Depending on weight and other factors, a gold tooth can go for $50.

Outside the Continental Coin and Jewelry Co. in Van Nuys, an electronic marquee draws prospective sellers by flashing images of money-making opportunities -- a dazzling gold ring here, a bright gold dental crown there.

"If it's gold, we're buying it," said marketing director Jeff Ringer. "You'd be amazed at what people bring in." MORE HERE

Dentists In The Dark About Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding and clenching, more commonly referred to as `bruxism` is an involuntary action, usually occurring at night and endured by millions of people in the UK. Although there are many possible causes, the main culprit appears to be stress. The consequences for the chronic bruxer can be severe. Not only can it result in disturbed sleep for themselves, but their partner can lose sleep from the constant grinding and gnashing noises. In the morning, the sufferer may wake up with several symptoms, including a throbbing headache and neck, shoulder and jaw pain. In extreme cases, they may also find that their fillings have become loose or fallen out altogether and teeth are fractured and worn down.

NoBrux, a UK company that specializes in the supply of US made dental guards to dentists and sufferers have carried out a survey on their website [http://www.nobrux.co.uk/] Respondents were asked "Does your dentist routinely ask whether you grind your teeth and discusses treatment options with you?" Around 80% of respondents said "no". MORE HERE

Frustrations of an unknown Dentist

This is an email from a Dentist, it could be anyone among you, change your life today, join our Molar Endodontics one week course to transform your life and never be frustrated again.

"I Am frustrated using all the systems like MM SONIC , PROTAPER ,X MART(was promoted to me to ensure less file fracture but in vain) and ultimately PROPEX II apex locator which falls at least 5-7mm short of apex.

I am a UG, completed in 1996 and practicing in Chennai. I get frustrated to get appointment from the Endodontist and match the same time for the patients to come. If I do RCT it takes almost an hour and in my practice that is too much time. I have used all Endo systems and costly equipments still I am uncomfortable. Recently I bought Propex II, X Smart but they have been of no help at all."

Bra as a bullet proof Vest- BBC News service
A US woman had a lucky escape when a burglar's bullet bounced off the metal underwire in her bra. Police in the city of Detroit said one of three intruders fired a shot when the woman looked out of her window and saw them raiding the house next door. The bullet smashed the window and hit her, but instead of causing serious injury - or worse - it was deflected off the wiring in her bra. The unnamed 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital and released the same day.

Post Extraction Bleeding leads to Dealth

Pauline Coles, 38, died after spitting up blood for several hours following the dental surgery in 2008.
West Somerset Coroners' Court was told Ms Coles was an alcoholic and had not sought medical help for her cirrhosis because of a fear of hospitals.
Coroner Michael Rose recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.

Dentist Lisle Lewis, who removed the rotten teeth at Blenheim House Dental Practice in Minehead, told the court she was unaware of the extent of Ms Coles' liver and clotting problems.
Mr Rose said: "Sadly Pauline Coles was the author of her own misfortune.

"There is no criticism of Dr Lewis and I am satisfied that she carried out the correct procedure."

Osteoclast polarization and orthodontic tooth movement, Enhance Anchorage of tooth by Chemical Means ?
Orthodontics & Craniofacial Research' Volume 12 Issue 2, Pages 105 - 112

Osteoclasts polarize when they contact activation signals that are associated with bone. Polarization is required for bone resorption and involves highly specialized mechanisms that represent attractive targets for the development of osteoclast-specific therapeutic agents. One potential use of such agents is to block tooth movement in spatially discrete locations to provide orthodontic anchorage.

Materials and methods – Our group's research was directed toward the development of agents that inhibited the polarization of osteoclasts, and efforts were underway to develop means to experimentally modulate orthodontic tooth movement. We performed 'proof-in-principle' experiments demonstrating pharmacological blockades of orthodontic tooth movement using integrin and matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in a rat model.

Results – We identified novel mechanisms underlying osteoclast bone resorption. Interactions between vacuolar H+-ATPase and the microfilament cytoskeleton that were unique to osteoclasts were described and characterized. Our group is now seeking to make use of this new knowledge, coupled with an emerging technique, supercomputer-based molecular modeling for the rational development of novel, osteoclast-specific therapeutic agents.
Conclusion – Fresh insight into the molecular details of osteoclastic bone resorption provides new opportunities for identifying agents to selectively modulate osteoclast activity. Such agents may contribute to evolution of the practice of orthodontics.

Periodontal Disease increases risk for HIV-1?

During the 87th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, a group of scientists from Nihon University (Tokyo, Japan) presented findings suggesting that periodontal disease could act as a risk factor for reactivating latent HIV-1 in affected individuals. Latently infected cells harbor HIV-1 proviral DNA genomes integrated with heterochromatins, allowing for the persistence of transcriptionally silent proviruses. Hypoacetylation of histone proteins by histone deacetylases (HDACs) is primarily involved in the maintenance of HIV-1 latency by repressing transcription from HIV-1 provirus. On the other hand, periodontal diseases, caused by infection with the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), are found worldwide and are among the most prevalent microbial diseases of mankind. Resolvins Have The Potential To Resolve Periodontal Inflammation And Restore Tissue Health

During the 87th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research held recently, scientists from Boston University reported on the discovery of Resolvins, a new family of biologically active products of omega-3 fatty acids with the therapeutic potential to resolve periodontal inflammation and restore the gums to health. Oil from fish contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); both are omega-3 fatty acids. These omega-3 fatty acids keep blood triglycerides in control and may inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis. EPA and DHA also have anti-inflammatory activity and are often used to help people with various inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. More HERE

Oral Care Key To Successful Organ Transplants

Study after study point to the connection between oral health and a person's general well-being.Maintaining good oral health, free of infection, is also very critical for successful organ transplantation and requires specialized dental care.According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 25,000 procedures are performed in the United States each year to replace organs, including the heart, kidneys, liver, intestines, and the pancreas.

Immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine, prednisone and azathioprine, are anti-rejection drugs intended to reduce the likelihood of transplant failure. Such drugs also can suppress the formation of saliva, in turn creating a dry mouth, the perfect breeding ground for infection."Our research has shown that active viral infection is frequently associated with severe clinical complications including transplant failure." said Nowzari. "Stress, immunosuppressant- or immune-dysfunction may trigger viral activation, causing damage to the organ."He added that the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is specifically associated with renal transplant failure.

Ultimately, prevention holds the key to a successful transplantation. Attention must be given to preventing infection in the mouth similarly to treating a sore or an ear or nail infection. Parents need daily vigilance with their children's habits and with identifying oral health providers for their children. A parent of a "medically compromised" child can stem the damage to oral health by following proper oral care routine. MORE HERE

Is it marketing or Research ?

If already the hard selling of self ligating systems was not enough, now one study has proved that self ligating brackets harbor less plaque and bacteria.
"We were surprised that the manner of ligation promoted differences in the levels of plaque bacteria surrounding the bonded tooth surfaces," noted Curt Machida, Ph.D., OHSU professor of integrative biosciences and principal investigator, whose lab was host for the study. "Our results suggest that the use of the self-ligating appliances promote reduced retention of plaque bacteria on tooth surfaces surrounding the appliances. More HERE

Chewing Gum Reduces Snack Cravings And Decreases Consumption Of Sweet Snacks

ScienceDaily (Apr. 20, 2009) — Men and women who chewed Extra® sugar-free gum three times hourly in the afternoon chose and consumed less snacks and specifically, less sweet snacks than they did when they did not chew gum. They still reached for a variety of snacks provided but the decrease in overall snack intake was significant at 40 calories and sweet snack intake specifically was significantly lowered by 60 calories. Miniscrews for upper incisor intrusion
EJO March 2009

The aim of this study was to investigate if true incisor intrusion can be achieved using miniscrews. Eleven patients (three males and eight females; mean age: 19.8 ± 4.8 years) with normal vertical dimension showing a pre-treatment deep bite of 5.9 ± 0.9 mm and a ‘gummy’ smile were enrolled in the study. After levelling of the maxillary central and lateral incisors with a segmental arch, an intrusive force of 80 g using closed coil springs was applied from two miniscrews placed between the roots of the lateral and canine teeth. The amount of incisor intrusion was evaluated on lateral cephalometric headfilms taken at the end of levelling (T1) and at the end of intrusion (T2). Statistical analysis of the data was performed using a paired t and Wilcoxon signed rank tests. A significance level of P <>

The mean upper incisor intrusion was 1.92 mm and the mean overbite decrease 2.25 ± 1.73 mm in 4.55 months. Upper incisor angulation resulted in a 1.81 ± 3.84 degree change in U1-PP angle and a 1.22 ± 3.64 degree change in U1-NA angle. However, these were not statistically significant (P > 0.05).

True intrusion can be achieved by application of intrusive forces close to the centre of resistance using miniscrews.

Text messaging harmful for thumb

A new South African study finds that the increase in the trend of writing text messages on cell phones can be disastrous for the thumb. Conducted by Safura Karim, a Grade 11 schoolgirl from Durban, the study has been published in the latest issue of the South African Medical Journal. She interviewed 320 teens from two city high schools and out of these 318 reported that they used MXit or similar text message forums on their mobile sets. The important finding was that out of the total students, 125 kids who text messaged a lot complained of blisters on their finger tips and thumb. Most also suffered repetitive strain injury and pain in their hands and back. "The thumb is the least dextrous of all our fingers and is not suited to the repetitive movements required to type on a cellular phone keypad," says Safura Karim who also conducted a study on PlayStation use five years ago. But it can be noted that now with advancement in technology new cellphones are out in the market which have keys like that in a keyboard and that can be operated with a stick. This can bring respite to the fingers. The study has come out at a good time as most of the teenagers use mobile phones these days and almost everybody uses the ‘sms’ or the short messaging service. And so the finger problem is being faced by maximum.

The More Oral Bacteria, The Higher The Risk Of Heart Attack, UB Study Shows

A study conducted at the University at Buffalo, where the gum disease/heart disease connection was uncovered, now has shown that two oral pathogens in the mouth were associated with an increased risk of having a heart attack, but that the total number of germs, regardless of type, was more important to heart health.

Results of the study are being presented during a poster session at the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) General Session being held in Miami, Fla., from April 1-4.

Oelisoa M. Andriankaja, D.D.S., Ph.D., conducted the study in UB's Department of Oral Biology in the School of Dental Medicine, as a postdoctoral researcher. She currently is an adjunct professor at the University of Puerto Rico's School of Dental Medicine.

"The message here," said Andriankaja, "is that even though some specific periodontal pathogens have been found to be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, the total bacterial pathogenic burden is more important than the type of bacteria.

"In other words, the total number of 'bugs' is more important than one single organism," she said. More HERE

New Needle Design to cut Risk

Each year, hundreds of thousands of people suffer medical complications from hypodermic needles that penetrate too far under their skin. A new device developed by MIT engineers and colleagues aims to prevent this from happening by keeping needles on target.

The device, which is purely mechanical, is based on concepts borrowed from the oil industry. It involves a hollow S-shaped needle containing a filament that acts as a guide wire. When a physician pushes the device against a tissue, she is actually applying force only to the filament, not the needle itself, thanks to a special clutch. Full Report

How to Choose a Digital Camera- Megapixel Myth

The truth is, though, that 6MP is enough to make a very nice 8 x 10" print—in fact, I've seen very nice, though soft, 8 x 10" prints from early 3MP DSLRs. More pixels can mean larger prints or more room for cropping. But who's making larger prints, other than professionals? And with compact cameras offering up to 24x zoom ranges, exactly how much cropping would someone need?

"I personally believed, before starting the E-System, that 12 was enough," Watanabe said. "We interviewed many professional photographers, people in studios, about how many they needed in the future. Before we started the system, we had a rough idea we'd be at a plateau at 12 megapixels." More HERE

What was Hot at IDS Cologne, the world's largest Dental Trade Fair

Cologne IDS is the largest dental Trade fair in the world held every two years. This year it was from 24-28 March, 2009. There were 1750 booths, it is virtually impossible to see everything, shear size of it is humiliating and the gimmicks companies play to attract crowds to their booths. This time it was flooded with Implants, 3 D Cad Cam technology. They are trying to drive these two product lines hard. There were also lots of interesting products, wait and shortly we will bring you a report.
