New Research shows way to Regrow Enamel
When tooth enamel is grown it is bathed in bubble-shaped groupings of proteins, Diekwisch said. The size of the protein bubbles varies in different animals, from 5 nanometers in cows to 20 nanometers in mice and 40 nanometers in frogs.

Diekwisch's team discovered that the longer the stretch of proline repeats, the more the protein bubbles contracted. The study also showed that the smaller protein bubbles were associated with longer enamel crystals, he said. The new discovery, Diekwisch said, will give new clues to engineer tooth enamel.

"We hope that one day these findings will help people replace lost parts of the tooth with a healthy layer of new enamel." MORE HERE

An endodontic file accidentally swallowed: Clinical and legal implications
Aus Dent J Dec 2009

The use of a rubber dam is an essential procedure when treating root canals, and not using it may compromise the success of the treatment, as well as the patient's health. This report presents a case in which a K-file was accidentally swallowed during an endodontic procedure, performed without the use of a rubber dam. Given the absence of immediate clinical complications, the subject underwent a chest radiograph. The file was located at the oesophagogastric junction and was later removed by endoscopy. In addition to the clinical repercussions, this example also illustrates the ethical-legal aspects of this type of accident. CLICK HERE TO Learn use of Rubber Dam

Genetics of Cavity causing bacteria
Researchers have uncovered the complete genetic make-up of the cavity-causing bacterium Bifidobacterium dentium Bd1, revealing the genetic adaptations that allow this microorganism to live and cause decay in the human oral cavity. The study, led by Marco Ventura's Probiogenomics laboratory at the University of Parma, and Prof. Douwe van Sinderen and Dr Paul O'Toole of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre at University College Cork, is published December 24 in the open-access journal PLoS Genetics. Dental Tourism hits Ireland
If you are willing to travel further afield, you can make greater savings. In Budapest’s Dental Care clinic, the cost of root canal treatment ranges from €58-€85, while in Poland, Dentists in Krakow offer a similar service costing up to €80.

While Thailand might seem a little far-flung for many, it has become increasingly popular as a location for dental tourism, with some Irish people combining a sun holiday with a dental overhaul. And when you look at the prices charged the motivation is clear.

At the Thai Smile Dental Clinic in Pattaya, for example, fillings cost from just €11, while extractions also start at this price. Dental implants, which can cost up to about €3,000 in Ireland, start at just €916, while a crown will set you back between €102-€245. FULL NEWS

Canadian Scientists find formula for beautiful face

Women's faces were found to be at their most attractive when the space between their pupils was just under half, or 46 per cent, of the width of her face from ear to ear.
The other perfect dimension was when the distance between her eyes and mouth was just over a third, or 36 per cent, of the overall length of her face from hairline to chin.
Experts said the 36/46 per cent ratios "correspond with those of an average face”.
Professor Kang Lee, from the University of Toronto and one of the lead authors of the study, said: “We already know that different facial features make a female face attractive – large eyes, for example, or full lips.
But Prof Lee said changing a person’s hairstyle was one way in which the ratios could be manipulated. MORE

Restoration Of Resorbed Mandible-Quintessence International January 2010
Guided bone regeneration has proven effective for the reconstruction of localized bony defects around endosseous implants. Acellular dermal matrix has been used in a wide range of dental applications, including root coverage and keratinized tissue build-up. In this report, acellular dermal matrix was used as a membrane in implantation with simultaneous bone augmentation in resorbed mandible situations. The width of the ridge was well-preserved, and the buccal dehiscence defects were covered with regenerate bone. This surgical technique may provide the clinician with an option for implant therapy. Further randomized controlled studies over long periods of time are necessary to establish whether this procedure offers long-term benefits.

Australian Dentist fined heavily for fraud on patient
A DENTIST who reconstructed a patient's mouth when the man required work to only three teeth has been ordered to pay more than $345,000 in compensation and interest.

Dr Mark Phung, who treated Mr Dean on numerous occasions in 2002 and 2003, charged his employer's insurance company $73,645 to perform root canals on each of his 28 teeth. In one bill, Dr Phung charged the insurer $28,740 for work performed on two occasions. In another, he charged $10,000 for one session.

One dental expert who reviewed Mr Dean's mouth said the work was ''a complete case of fraud … by the dentist'' and an ''extremely poor dentistry job''. MORE HERE

Cosmetic dental surgery not reimbursed under CGHS
New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) Expenses incurred on treatment of dental diseases are reimbursed to beneficiaries of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) at pre-fixed rates, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi said today.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, he said only essential dental treatments are reimbursed but not cosmetic surgeries.

Till now only 10 procedures were allowed for reimbursement but now 55 more procedures are being added, he said.

"Procedures for which there are no CGHS rates, reimbursement is considered as per AIIMS rates," he said adding treatment of asymmetrical teeth of children was not considered for reimbursement as it fell in the category of cosmetic treatment.

Bone Quality: A Reality for the Process of Osseointegration
Implant Dentistry:-Dec 2009 - Volume 18 - Issue 6 - pp 480-485
This article subscribes to the initial condition of bone quality and its ultimate effect on the success of dental implant treatment. A high success rate for the preservation of the alveolar bone around oral implants is predicated on good bone quality. For implantologists, the classification of bone quality should be based on the key elements required for osseointegration. These include structural morphology and cellular characteristics such as monocytes/macrophages, mesenchymal progenitor cells, fibroblasts, osteoclasts, and cells associated with angiogenesis.

Grow Bone, Gingivitis in Your genes, Gum disease vaccine, Man vs Women

Diastema Closure with Composite
Patients present to the office with spaces between their teeth that they would like to have closed on a regular basis. There are numerous ways to treat these patients, which may include orthodontics, periodontics, and restorative dentistry. Often times, the treatment proposed is based on the comfort level or skill of the providing dentist. Porcelain veneers are often the treatment modality chosen because of the predictability and financial reward.

Composite resins, on the other hand, require a higher skill level by dentists because they are fabricating the restoration instead of the ceramist. The advent of newer composite resins, which give us added strength and polishability, provides us new modalities with which to satisfy patients' expectations. FULL PAPER

 Dental Stem Cells Regrow Bone
StemSave,Inc., the market leader in the field of stem cell recovery and cryo-preservation lauds research published in the November issue of the European Cells and Materials Journal citing the reconstruction of the human mandible bone with autologous dental pulp stem cells. StemSave commends Italian researchers from the 2nd University of Naples for their groundbreaking work.

This marks the first time dental stem cell research has moved from the laboratory to human clinical trials. The repair and regeneration of bone is particularly significant for the oral maxillofacial field because the repair of these bones, which aid in orofacial functions like speech, chewing, swallowing and facial expressions are extremely intricate and complex. Men lose their minds speaking to pretty women

The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those who chat to someone they do not find attractive.

Researchers who carried out the study, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology, think the reason may be that men use up so much of their brain function or 'cognitive resources' trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.
Women, however, were not affected by chatting to a handsome man. MORE HERE

And Now a Vaccine for Gum disease, How Soon ?
Australian scientists are leading a push to produce a vaccine to treat severe gum disease. Up to one third of the population suffers from it and the condition has also been linked to heart disease and even strokes.

The vaccine's developers say they hope to prevent the disease progressing. That's in contrast to existing treatments which only manage the symptoms. The whole notion is to make a vaccine that would treat colonisation of people's mouths with porphyromonas gingivalis and thereby slow or halt the progress of the periodontal disease and thereby save people's teeth. Old Silver Fillings are not Toxic
Using a special X-ray technique, the scientists analyzed the surface of freshly prepared metal fillings and compared these with the surface of aged fillings (about 20 years old) from a dental clinic. Fresh fillings contained metallic mercury, which can be toxic. Aged fillings, however, typically contain a form of mercury, called beta-mercuric sulfide or metacinnabar, which is unlikely to be toxic in the body. Full REPORT

Nearly One Third of Human Genome Is Involved in Gingivitis
Gingivitis, which may affect more than one-half of the U.S. adult population, is a condition commonly attributed to lapses in simple oral hygiene habits. However, a new study shows that development and reversal of gingivitis at the molecular level is apparently much more complicated than its causes might indicate.
Research conducted jointly by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Procter & Gamble (P&G) Oral Care has found that more than 9,000 genes -- nearly 30 percent of the genes found in the human body are expressed differently during the onset and healing process associated with gingivitis.
Results of the study are published today in the December 2009 edition of the Journal of Periodontology. This study is the first to successfully identify gene expression and biological pathways involved with the onset and healing process of gingivitis. MORE HERE

Protective role of osteopontin in endodontic infection
Immunology-Volume 129 Issue 1, Pages 105 - 114
Endodontic infections are polymicrobial infections resulting in bone destruction and tooth loss. The host response to these infections is complex, including both innate and adaptive mechanisms. Osteopontin (OPN), a secreted, integrin-binding protein, functions in the regulation of immune responses and enhancement of leucocyte migration.
This study assessed the role of OPN in the host response to endodontic infection using a well-characterized mouse model.
Study concluded that OPN has a protective effect on polymicrobial infection, at least partially because of alterations in phagocyte recruitment and/or persistence at the sites of infection, and that this molecule has a potential therapeutic role in polymicrobial infections.

Paper Point technique for WL in Endodontics
Triple O, Volume 108, Issue 5, Pages e101-e105 (November 2009)
Despite not having been formally evaluated in the endodontic literature, claims have been made regarding the acceptability of the paper point technique (PPT) in estimating the location of the apical foramen (AF). Our aim was to investigate the repeatability and accuracy of PPT in estimating AF location in a cohort of dental patients.

Root canals with ≤10° of curvature (n = 71) in unsalvageable anterior and premolar teeth were measured using PPT as described in the literature. An endodontic file was cemented in each canal to the position indicated by PPT. Teeth were extracted and microscopic computerized tomography scanned.
The PPT was 0.5 mm short to 0.5 mm long of AF in 87% of the canals. Repeated measurements in a given canal were within 0.19 mm of each other 95% of the time.

For relatively straight root canals, PPT appears to be similar to current clinically acceptable, NOTE- It is a well known fact that most canals are curved even though they appear straight in radiograph.

New Mouthwash will give long term Caries protection
A research team at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has developed a new mouthwash formulation that may provide long-term protection against tooth decay. “The beauty of this design is the simplicity. All one may have to do is their routine oral hygiene procedure and then rinse with the formulation that we have developed. It could protect the teeth over a long period of time,” Dr. Wang said. “The key is to have the antimicrobials stay where they are most needed – the tooth surface.” MORE HERE

Sweden: Muslim dentist loses discrimination lawsuit for refusal to wear short sleeves

A Muslim woman from Kista north of Stockholm who was denied a job as a dentist after refusing to wear short-sleeved work clothes for religious reasons has lost her discrimination case against the Swedish Public Dental Service (Folktandvården). Following the completion of her dental studies in January 2008, the now 29-year-old woman applied for a position with the public dental service in Stockholm.

During the hiring process, she was informed that the dental agency requires personnel to wear short-sleeved gowns when treating patients. But the rules, put in place for hygiene reasons, came into conflict with her Muslim faith, which requires that she show as little skin as possible in public. MORE

Centre's decision for quota in medical PG not binding on states, says Supreme Court
In a ruling having a major ramification for medical education, the Supreme Court on Wednesday held that the Centre's decision to provide quota for SCs and STs in post-graduate medical courses did not automatically bind the state governments to follow suit and implement it in their medical colleges.

Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal appeared disinclined to grant a direction to the states to follow the example set by the central government. It upheld the Haryana government's decision not to provide quota for SC/ST in PG medical courses.  MORE HERE
