Sutras by Maharishi Vagbhata: Summary


Fenugreek or methi sprouts are very good for health.

Continued from The Sacred Cow

  • No water after food for min 1.5 hrs. This is best way to lose weight.

  • Warm water first thing in morning. Morning saliva is very important and should go into the body not wasted.

  • Use Lota instead of tumbler. In our society we never had tumblers because lota is much more scientific. Low surface tension is very important since it reduces pressure levels in the body. Example of milk to cleanse skin. Similar thing happens in large intestine – low tension water pulls out the debris lodged in the large intestine. This debris causes innumerable ailments. Water should always be drunk sitting down, and never be drunk cold. It should always be warm. Cold water’s surface tension is higher and it cools down the stomach and weakens the rest of the organs. In extreme heat, drinking water from clay pots is allowed.

  • Eat food sitting down. Always sit in cross legged position. Opposing things (Virudh Aahar) should not be eaten together. Milk-curd, honey-ghee, jackfruit-milk, milk-citrus fruits (except gooseberry).

  • Dwidal (bengal gram, peas, etc, pulses with two halves) and curd not to be eaten together. If you really need to mix them, curds should be tempered. Same for buttermilk

  • Morning meal should be within 2.5 hrs of sunrise. Evening meal before sunset. If hungry during day one can have jaggery-bengal gram, jaggery-peanuts. Too much chikki should be followed by dried (Saunth) or fresh ginger.

  • Eat locally grown foods. E.g. those living in hot areas should not eat much wheat as it grown in cold places. Bajra is hot, so are rice and jowar. Bajra should be eaten with jaggery and ghee to balance its heat.

  • BASIC FOODS: Foods that are basic in nature generally bring about better health. fenugreek (methi), carrot, spinach, brinjals, any fruits without juice – apple, banana, guava, coconut etc. Bottlegourd (lauki) is the most basic in vegetables.

DISEASES and TREATMENTS

  • Acidity – Water is the best medicine when drunk slowly and at frequent intervals. Roast carom seeds (ajwain) and take it with black salt. Carom seeds can be included in the menu generally, and this combination can be taken after every meal if there is continuous gastric problem. Jaggery is also very good. Drop sugar completely.
  • Addiction to alchohol – gau mootra, ginger juice, dried ginger boiled in water. Gau mootra is most important. Smoking increases Sulphur in body – best option is gau mootra.
  • Addictions - Quit alchohol and tobacco, cigarette – use will power, or use gau mutra not ark and tea of dried ginger for a maximum duration of 1.5 months.
  • Arthritis - Aggravated vata causes arthritis. Avoid surgery completely as that destroys the body further. Lime stone (chuna) in curds, buttermilk, water or juice is helpful. Fenugreek (methi) seeds are also very helpful. Harshringaar leaves is most basic thing in nature. Crush a few leaves and boil in water until it reduces to half. Drink this like tea in morning to heal both types of arthritis, rheumatoid and osteo. Peanuts and jaggery should be eaten, also sesame seeds (black is better).
  • Asthma is caused by vata – cinnamon with honey, jaggery, eat coconut daily (this is a unique item – has juice but is basic in nature). Sesame seeds are also very effective.
  • Backache – lime stone (chuna).
  • Bad breath - eat four oranges for a week, along with the pith (the fibrous white part) first thing in the morning. Bad breath is caused by food residue rotting in the stomach. The fibre cleanses this.
  • Boils in Mouth – this indicates large intestine is not clear. Take warm water in morning from lota. Borax 30 or 200 thrice in water.
  • Bones pain – Limestone (chuna)
  • Children urinating in bed – boil dates in milk give both milk and dates.
  • Frequent cold and cough – take honey, jaggery or lime stone (chuna) as it removes not only vata but also kapha. Cow ghee in nose. Haldi is a kapha nashak. Haldi in milk with ghee is even better.
  • Constipation – Triphala at night. Else drink milk with ghee at night. Not for more than 3 mths at a time.
  • Coughing in children – Kapha naashak foods like Paan, Saunth, honey, jaggery.
  • Dark circles under eyes – massage with morning saliva. Useful for any skin problems.
  • Diabetes – Mix 1 tsp each of fenugreek (methi) and Triphala choorna and let it steep in hot water overnight. Chew and drink this in the morning. Blood sugar will come down in 3-4 months. Even diabetics can take jaggery and juices. Natural sugar is not harmful (fructose) since it is easily digestible. Sugar is harmful.
  • Hair loss – place curds in a brass vessel for 5-6 days until it is very sour and green. Massage the scalp with this and wash with shikakai after an hour. Repeat once a week. Eat triphala in the morning with jaggery or honey.
  • High BP indicates high acidity in blood. Take basic foods. Fenugreek (methi), spinach, brinjals, carrot, any fruits without juice – apple, banana, guava, coconut etc. Bottlegourd (lauki) is most basic in veggies. Lowering of acidity will reduce Tryglicerides, cholesterol, overweight etc. fenugreek (methi) seeds should be soaked in water overnight and chewed in the morning. Drink the water after chewing the seeds.
  • Kidney and Bladder Stones – absolutely avoid lime stone (chuna) and high calcium foods. Boil Pashanbheda(Bergenia ligulata) in water and drink it. If this is not available, you may take the homeo equivalent in Q potency, called Burberis Vulgaris.
  • Mestruation - Too much pain, flow, irritation, itching etc during menses – vata and pitta are high during this time. Take cow ghee in very hot water and drink like tea, 2-3 times per day. All menstrual probs will get taken care of. Take this only during menses.
  • Mouth Ulcers - the digestive tract is not being cleansed. Drink water in morning to cleanse large intestine. In case this does not help take Borax 30 or 200 (take three doses) from homeopathic shop. Put few drops of Borax in water and take it in three parts.
  • Numbness in hands and legs – take Lime stone (chuna)
  • Overweight/Obesity – eat more basic foods, like fenugreek (methi), carrot, spinach, brinjals, any fruits without juice – apple, banana, guava, coconut etc. Bottlegourd (bottlegourd (lauki)) is most basic in vegetables. Lowering of acidity will reduce Tryglicerides, cholesterol, weight etc. fenugreek (methi) seeds should be soaked in water overnight and chewed in the morning. Drink water after the seeds are chewed. Take Amla any form = 3-4 fruits equivalent. Overweight people are Vitamin C and Calcium deficient hence Triphala in normal ratio is recommended.
  • Old age joint pains – lime stone (chuna) is best. Water sip sip
  • Pitta problems – ghee, carom seeds (ajwain) and black salt.
  • Sleeplessness means vata is high – warmed cow ghee in nostrils before bedtime. Snort very lightly. Various other benefits are no bad dreams, no interruptions during sleep, improved memory for children.
  • Sleepy throughout the day – take lime stone (chuna) with buttermilk.
  • Sneezing – apply ghee in nostrils and take lime stone (chuna).
  • Thyroid – Drink a teaspoon of ground coriander leaves with warm water. Leaves can be substituted with coriander seeds.
  • Tonsillitis – haldi milk at night.
  • Tuberculosis – gau mutra and not ark. 3-4 months will be enough. Chuna
  • Uric acid – basic foods, gau mutra is best (not ark)
  • Weakness - Figs (anjeer) is useful for those who feel they lack strength in body.
  • White discharge – Shatavari can be used. Mix it with warm milk and drink at night.

MISCELLANEOUS

While drinking water from a tamba vessel one should not be barefoot

Never reheat anything put in fridge once. Leave it out to heat up naturally and then eat it.

Kevda daalaa hua paani keval summer mein.

Eat sesame seeds after food daily if you want to stay trim and avoid heart attacks. Black sesame is better.

Rock salt(Sendha namak) is the best salt for daily consumption. Black salt is next. It will help lower BP.

Go mutra ark – only 1 spoon. Go mutra shud only be half cup.
